Our Comprehensive Tinnitus Assessment

We offer a thorough tinnitus assessment conducted by our qualified audiologists. Here's what you can expect:

Detailed Questionnaire

We'll start by asking you to complete our tinnitus questionnaire. This helps us identify, quantify, and evaluate the difficulties you're experiencing due to tinnitus. It's the first step in creating a personalised management plan.

Comprehensive Audiological Evaluation

Our assessment includes a battery of tests to examine each part of your ear:

1. Extended High Frequency Audiometry (EHFA)

EHFA tests hearing beyond the standard 8 kHz range (up to 16 kHz), providing valuable insight into early or hidden cochlear damage. It is especially useful in tinnitus assessment, as it can detect high-frequency hearing loss missed by conventional tests, assist in matching the pitch of tinnitus, and help identify conditions like sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) even when standard audiograms appear normal.

2. Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAEs)

DPOAEs objectively assess inner ear (cochlear) function, particularly outer hair cell activity. By measuring sound “echoes” generated within the ear, this test can detect subtle cochlear damage or abnormal activity often linked to tinnitus. It is particularly valuable when standard hearing tests are normal, helping uncover underlying issues and differentiate causes such as noise-induced damage.

3. Speech-in-Noise Testing

Speech-in-noise testing evaluates how well a person understands speech in everyday noisy environments, such as restaurants or crowded spaces. Unlike standard hearing tests, it reflects real-world listening ability by assessing how effectively the brain separates speech from background noise. It can reveal “hidden hearing loss” and provides results as a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), indicating how much louder speech must be than noise for clear understanding.

Potential Further Investigations

Depending on our findings, we may recommend:

Consultation with an ear, nose, and throat specialist (otolaryngologist)

Imaging tests such as CT or MRI scans
